India has 12.9 cr women workers, 56% self-employed: Govt

New Delhi: There are 12.9 crore women workers as per National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) survey conducted in 2011-12, government today told the Lok Sabha.

"As per the survey results, the number of women workers was 12.9 crore during 2011-12," Minister of State for Labour and Employment Vishnu Deo Sai told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Around 51% of Indian workers are self-employed, mostly in rural areas, while 33.5% of them are casual labour (33.5%) and only 15.6% have salaried employment, an official survey revealed on Thursday.
